Digital creative agency Purple, Rock, Scissors! (PRPL) brought the magic when Warner Bros. and LEGO asked them to create an interactive experience for their Harry Potter exhibit, Magic at Play. Pulling straight from the books’ lore, PRPL delivered a “Mirror of Erised” using Augmented Reality to transform users into a LEGO minifigure, sort them into one of the four Hogwarts houses, and let them cast spells. We sat down with the team to get a more behind-the-mirror look into this immersive experience.
How does this project represent your creative ethos at Purple, Rock, Scissors?
The LEGO Harry Potter™ Mirror of Erised experience is an expression of our desire to leave our users with a sense of delight by cultivating a fully immersed, meaningful experience. As an agency, it’s paramount that our shared goals are clear, our technology build is tailored to the project’s requirements and that the product produces tangible results.
Tell us about the structure of the team that worked on the immersive experience.
The team comprised an experienced Senior Producer, the VP of Experience, the Director of Innovation, and our Principal Engineer, all united in the mission to actualize LEGO’s vision through an unforgettable augmented reality experience. Collaboratively, the team delineated the UX Design and Visual direction of the application. With a focus on 3D animation elements, our VP of Experience led the charge, while the Director of Innovation and Principal Engineer synergized efforts in application development. Utilizing voice recognition software, body mapping technology, and physical hardware, they orchestrated the complete experience.
How did the project contribute to Purple, Rock, Scissors’ mission?

What has been your biggest learning or takeaway from creating this immersive experience?
Creating this experience was a journey filled with invaluable lessons and insights. One of the most significant takeaways was the importance of collaboration and innovation in overcoming complex challenges. From integrating body tracking for real-time movement to implementing voice recognition technology for spell casting, we faced numerous technical hurdles along the way. However, through collaboration with our partners and relentless innovation, we were able to surmount these obstacles and deliver a truly magical experience.
