Lauren Shapiro
Design Partner, Work & Co
Since joining the company ten years ago, Lauren has been hands-on across strategy, research, concepting, and execution. She has designed and helped launch work for clients including Breastcancer.org, Planned Parenthood, IKEA, ALDO, and her work has been recognized by Fast Company Innovation by Design, TIME Best Inventions, and the Webby Awards. She has helped shape the company’s approach to accessibility and inclusive design with a focus on centering diverse user and community voices. Outside work, she volunteers for 81cents, an organization focused on closing the pay gap among underrepresented individuals.
When asked about what constitutes creative success at Work & Co, Lauren emphasized the importance of real ROI. “We consider impact — first for the companies we partner with, but also for the end users, our teams, and the industry as a whole,” she explained.
For Work & Co, success is not merely about launching products but delivering experiences that resonate and inspire. This requires a collaborative effort across design, engineering, and product teams to ensure thoughtfulness, polish, and consideration are embedded in every project.
The core principle of Work & Co’s approach to idea generation is focus. Lauren detailed how they structure their processes to eliminate noise, dedicating multidisciplinary teams to one client at a time. This deep immersion allows teams to fully explore the problem space and leverage internal and client domain expertise. While the company has been building products on the foundations of AI for many years, the rise of generative AI over the last 12-16 months has led to Work & Co integrating AI to enhance research, ideation, and iteration, pushing boundaries further.
As Lauren explained, “How we work matters just as much as the final outcome.” Work & Co prioritizes forming highly collaborative teams that foster creativity by balancing skill sets, incorporating diverse perspectives, and frequently user testing to validate assumptions. As leaders, their responsibility is to elevate the craft collectively and push digital design forward, stretching boundaries while balancing vision with constraints.
A standout project Lauren helped lead is their collaboration with Planned Parenthood. The open-ended brief allowed Work & Co to innovate with technology, resulting in “Roo,” a gender-neutral, AI-powered chatbot that provides teens with medically vetted, non-judgemental sexual health information. “To date, Roo has had millions of conversations and helped transform how Planned Parenthood uses new technologies,” Lauren shared. “At our core, our work has always been and will continue to be focused on creating impactful, memorable, inclusive, and joyful experiences for our clients’ businesses and users.”
Reflecting on the company’s evolution, Lauren noted significant growth since its founding in 2013. “I joined as the third employee as a mid-level product designer,” she recalled. Initially focused on single digital products, such as websites or apps, the company has now grown to handle large-scale, transformative projects and ecosystem work with deep, long-term relationships.
Discussing future directions, Lauren talked about how technology can actually increase our ability to be creative and collaborative, versus diminish it. She sees this period as a time for new energy and enthusiasm to explore new branches of digital creativity, highlighting immersive experiences and AI collaboration. “Immersive experiences have the ability to change how we navigate the world,” she explained. “For example, the team’s recent Apple Vision Pro experience for the PGA TOUR transforms how fans engage with golf, transporting them to the green from home.”
Lauren emphasized that the guiding light for future projects will be maintaining a focus on joy, hope, and humanity amidst the noise of technological advancement. “The future won’t just be about new technologies, but new ways of thinking and working,” she explained, pointing to the importance of drawing inspiration from diverse fields and unexpected places.
The team at Work & Co is energized by the future, seeing it as an opportunity to define new creative paths in real-time. Blurring both digital and physical, and human and AI, is priming us for big paradigm shifts once again — which is great for innovative and ambitious brands but as important, it will offer chances for designers to work in fresh ways.
We want to thank Work & Co for being one of the Luminaries at the w3 Awards, raising the bar for excellence in digital creativity each season. Your company could be a luminary in the making.
