Global Chief Creative Officer
Critical Mass
Val is an avid storyteller with over 20 years of creative experience across design, product, AR/VR, film, brand strategy, marketing, retail innovation, gaming, and applications for some of the world’s biggest brands—such as Mars, BMW, FOX Entertainment, Diageo, JPMorgan Chase, Coke, Microsoft, AT&T, Kraft, and Lululemon. Prior to joining Critical Mass, Val was the Executive Creative Director for Wunderman Thompson California. Prior to WT, she was the Global VP Creative at Method Products.
Before that, she was the ECD at EVB, leading work for the NBA, Facebook, and Twitter. She was also ECD, Global Innovation Lead at SapientNitro, where she led the AVATAR digital ecosystem for James Cameron’s Lightstorm. Before jumping into digital, Val taught college-level graphic design at an engineering school. Her love for teaching has helped her mentor, advocate for, and lead women’s diversity and junior talent programs over the years.
In the dynamic realm of creative agencies, success is often measured by a delicate balance of factors: audience engagement, client satisfaction, and team well-being. At Critical Mass, this definition of success runs deep within its creative ethos. Beyond meeting the requirements of a brief, Critical Mass strives for work that evokes a visceral response—a love that transcends the confines of conventional metrics.
For Critical Mass, creative success is about forging profound connections with audiences, fostering fruitful collaborations with clients, and nurturing a vibrant team culture. As Val explains, “We know the great work and awards will follow if we get this right.” This sentiment underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to understanding the nuanced needs of its teams and clients, a cornerstone of its creative philosophy.
When it comes to creative standards, Critical Mass sets the bar sky-high. Rooted in a legacy of design excellence, the agency’s leadership team places a premium on craftsmanship, attention to detail and reflection. As Val aptly puts it, “We hit this high bar often, but there are, of course, misses along the way. Sitting with those moments, reflecting on, and discussing the mistakes and lessons learned are more important to maintaining the standards than anything else we do.” This dedication to maintaining excellence is further underscored by leadership’s commitment to continuous learning and collaboration across teams and disciplines.
Reflecting on Critical Mass’s creative journey unveils a remarkable transformation. From its roots as a web and product-focused agency to its current status as a versatile creative powerhouse, Critical Mass has navigated a path of evolution and growth. After discussing the agency’s future with CEO Chris Gokiert, Val realized “we needed to make a huge shift towards becoming the agency that activates creatively across the ecosystem in the right spaces and places.”
As Val notes, “We got ahead of what we now see—CMOs all over the world are asking for this.”
Looking ahead, Critical Mass envisions a future where brands navigate a digitally empowered world with finesse. With a focus on long-term loyalty and meaningful experiences, Critical Mass prepares to usher in a new era of creativity—one where digital wallets and blockchain integration redefine the creative paradigm.
Val asserts, “Meaningful experiences will exist outside of the walled gardens we see today, and an interoperable version of the connected world will emerge.” Guided by deep research and a commitment to artistic integrity, Critical Mass stands poised to lead the charge towards a digital future fueled by innovation and purpose.
In the arsenal of creative tools, one entity reigns supreme: generative AI. At Critical Mass, AI isn’t just a tool; it’s a source of inspiration that enhances the creative process while preserving the essence of human ingenuity. As Val explains, “The quip that ‘AI won’t replace your jobs—humans that are using it wisely will’ resonates with me. We all have to remember that AI is a tool, not a creative idea. I’m suggesting we lean into it almost as a muse, as a spare set of hands, and as a creative collaborator. ”
In navigating the ever-changing landscape of creativity, optimism shines brightly as a guiding beacon. At Critical Mass, optimism, empathy, and kindness are not just ideals—they’re guiding principles that inform every project and decision. As Val reflects, “Optimism is going to be really important in navigating these next few years in the creative world.”
With honesty, education, and purposeful creativity at its core, Critical Mass remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding creative excellence and advocating for work that makes a meaningful impact.
We want to thank Critical Mass for being one of the Luminaries at the w3 Awards, raising the bar for excellence in digital creativity each season. Your company could be a luminary in the making.
